Our History

Peoples Party of Kenya was started at the advent of multi-party politics in Kenya in Limuru on 22nd March 1992 by likeminded people who believed in a just society build on principles of Equity, Justice and Liberty. The founders then led by Harun Waweru assisted by Kitur, George Mwaura Mburu Sec Gen, Josphat Njagi, Samuel Njenga and Kaberere among other members.

The Party didn’t participate in the first multiparty general elections because he was denied registration by KANU regime. In 1997 the party was received its registration Certificate from the registrar of society but boycotted elections held on the same year alongside like minded parties insisting on reform before the General Election.

In 2002 general election the party fielded candidates and managed to have councilors elected on the party’s ticket.

During the 2007 General election the party fielded candidates and managed to have one Member of Parliament and a number of councilors. A majority of them came from kiambu including the chairman of the then Karuri Town council.

In the year 2008 political parties act was enacted creating the office of Registrar of Political parties and requiring all political parties in Kenya to meet certain threshold among them was to have offices and two hundred members in all the eight provinces. Peoples party of Kenya led by Jacob Gitau the current chairman (was party youth leader then), John Kihiko the secretary General, Juliet Makokha the Vice Chairperson and Josphat Njagi the party treasurer (Was organizing secretary then) among other leaders fulfilled all the requirements and received certificate of full registration Number 031.

Currently the party has several MCAs elected in the 2017 general elections serving electorates in various counties across the country. In the year 2012 the political parties act was amended to conform to the new constitution (2010). All political parties were supposed to conform to the new law and again the peoples Party of Kenya under the leadership of Jacob Gitau, John Kihiko, Juliet Makokha, and Josphat Njagi among other leaders qualified and was issued with certificate of full registration Number 022.
